Anatomy and Structure of the Periodontium Flashcards
Periodontology
That specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and
surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes. Involves implantation, tissue regeneration and engineering.
Periodontium
The whole unit which provides support necessary to maintain the teeth.
What are the four components that make up the periodontium?
- gingiva
- periodontal ligament
3.cementum - alveolar bone
Marginal gingiva (free gingiva)
The border of the gingiva that surrounds the teeth in a collar like fashion.
Approximately how wide is marginal gingiva?
1 mm wide
Zenith
The most apical point of the marginal gingiva
Apicocoronal dimension of the zenith?
0.06mm
The mediodistal dimension of the zenith?
0.96mm
Gingival sulcus
A v-shapped shallow crevice around the tooth on one side and epithelial lining on the other side
Periodontal probe
The metallic instrument used to measure the depths of the sulcus
What is the normal depth of gingival sulcus in humans?
2 to 3 mm
Where is attached gingiva located?
It is located between the free marginal groove and the mucogingival junction. The main part of the gums that is visible.
Mucogingival junction
relatively loose and moveable alveolar mucosa it demarcs the ending of the attached gingiva.
Interdental gingiva
The gingiva that occupies the gingival embrasure or the interproximal space between the teeth.
What is the overlying gingiva composed of?
stratified squamous epithelium and connective tissue
