Anatomy and Functions Flashcards
What is the function of the Cornea?
Allows light in while keeping other things out and helps refract light on the retina.
What is the Sclera?
A tough elastic connective tissue that encases & protects the eyeball
What is the Choroid and it’s function?
Darkly pigmented tissue through which blood vessels nourish the back of the eye. Also absorbs light and prevents reflections.
What is the Ciliary Body?
Thickened portion of the choroid that is attached to the suspensory ligaments.
How does the Ciliary Body help the eye focus light?
The smooth muscle contracts & relaxes to change the shape of the lens.
What is the iris?
The pigmented anterior portion of the choroid
What is the function of the iris?
Controls the amount of light that enters the eye by circular muscles.
What is the pupil?
The opening of the iris that allows light into the eye.
What is the retina comprised of?
Photoreceptor cells: rods and cones
What is the Fovea Centralis?
Slight depression in the retina that has a high [ ] of cones for clear, precise, colour vision.
What are rods?
Photoreceptor that works best in dim light and detects light in black and white
What type of Photoreceptor is responsible for night vision?
Rods, which have the pigment Rhodopsin that is sensitive to low light levels.
What are cones?
Photoreceptor sensitive to colour and bright light
What is the function of the lens?
Responsible for focusing light on the retina.
What is Aqueous Humour?
Thin fluid between the cornea and lens that refracts light and absorbs nutrients for the eye tissue
