Anatomy Flashcards
2 primary functions of respiratory system
- Ventilation: mass movement of gas in and out of lungs
2. Gas exchange: transfer of O2 into blood and removal of CO2
Lung clearance systems
- Mucociliary clearance
2. Cough
Anatomy of respiratory system
- URT
- LRT
- Pleural cavity
- Thoracic cage
- Respiratory muscles
URT has
- Nasal cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
LRT has
- Conducting part
2. Gaseous exchange part
Function of conducting part of LRT
- Conducts air into gaseous exchange parts of lungs
2. Traps particles 1-5um via sedimentation via MCC
Airway lining of LRT
- Central airways - mucus layer, ciliated epithelium, goblet cells, submucosal glands
- Peripheral airways - less cilia, Clara cells
Function of gaseous exchange part of LRT
Gas exchange between O2 and CO2 occurs via diffusion in alveoli that are both ventilated and perfused
Right lung lobes are
UL, ML, LL
Left lobes are
UL and LL
Left lung fissure are
Oblique fissure
Right lung fissures are
Horizontal and oblique fissure
The pleura are what type of membrane
Serous
The 2 pleuras are
- Visceral pleura
2. Parietal pleura
Visceral pleura attaches to the
Lungs
Parietal pleura attaches to the
Chest wall
Purpose of parietal pleura is to
Provide lubrication to reduce friction during breathing
Negative intrapleural pressure is a combination of
- Lungs are elastic and want to recoil inwards
2. Chest wall wants to expand outwards
True ribs attach to
T1-T7
Surface anatomy of apex of lungs (anterior and posterior)
Anterior: 2.5cm above clavicle
Posterior: C7
Surface anatomy of base of lungs (anterior and posterior)
Anterior: anteriorly to rib 6 (and laterally to rib 8)
Posterior: T10
Surface anatomy of horizontal fissure of lungs (anterior and posterior)
Anterior: above 4th rib
Posterior: T3/4
Primary respiratory muscles
- Diaphragm
- Scalenes
- External intercostals
Other inspiratory muscles
- Parasternal intercostals
2. External intercostals
Accessory respiratory muscles for inspiration
- SCM
- UFT
- Pec major and minor
- Serratus anterior
- Thoracic extensors
Accessory respiratory muscles for expiration
- Abdominals
2. Internal intercostals
