Anatomy Flashcards
How many sets of paired nerves arise directly from the brain?
cranial nerves - 12 sets of paired nerves
Which of the cranial nerves arise from the cerebrum?
The first two nerves
1 - olfactory
2 - optic
Which of the cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem?
All 10 apart from 1 (olfactory) and 2 (optic)
What are the components of the “brain stem”?
The midbrain, pons and medulla
What is the IV cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Trochlear Nerve
Comes from posterior side of midbrain, longest intracranial length of all CNs
How are the cranial nerves numbered?
They are numbered by their location on the brain stem.
Superior to inferior, then medial to lateral.
As well as the order of their exit from the cranium (anterior to posterior) - through the canals, fissures and foramen
What is the III cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Oculomotor
Midbrain-pontine junction - boundary of the pons and the midbrain
What is the V cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Trigeminal
Pons
What is the VI cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Abducens
Pontine-medulla junction
What is the VII cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Facial
Pontine-medulla junction
What is the VIII cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Vestibulocochlear
Pontine-medulla junction
What is the IX cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Glossopharyngeal
Medulla oblongata - posterior to the olive
What is the X cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Vagus
Medulla oblongata - posterior to the olive
What is the XI cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Accessory
Medulla oblongata - posterior to the olive
What is the XII cranial nerve and where does it arise?
Hypoglossal
Medulla oblongata - anterior to the olive
