Anatomy Flashcards
What is the “gray matter” of the brain?
the cerebral cortex, or outer portion
What are the main lobes of the brain?
- Frontal Lobe
- Temporal Lobe
- Parietal Lobe
- Occipital Lobe
What are the main functions of the frontal lobe?
- planning
- problem solving
- speech production
- impulse inhibition
- voluntary movement
“I’m going to need a sip of my coffee soon.”
-what part of the brain generates this thought?
the frontal lobe
What part of the brain allows you to reach forward and grab your coffee mug?
the motor cortex of the frontal lobe
What are the main functions of the parietal lobe?
Reading
Taste
“This coffee tastes bitter.”
-what part of the brain generates this?
the parietal lobe
Feeling the temperature of the coffee mug or the pressure of the mug in your hands is due to what portion of the brain?
the somatosensory cortex of the parietal lobe
What separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe?
the central sulcus
What are the functions of the temporal lobe?
- auditory info
- olfactory info
- facial recognition
- language comprehension (Wernicke’s)
Being able to smell the coffee wafting from your mug is due to which portion of the brain?
the temporal lobe
What separates the temporal lobe from the rest of the cerebral hemisphere?
the Sylvian fissure
What is “prosopagnosia?”
facial blindness
What is main function of the occipital lobe?
processing of visual information
What are the 3 main divisions of the brain?
- Hindbrain
- Midbrain
- Forebrain
What structures make up the “brainstem?”
- pons
- medulla
- midbrain
- spinal cord
What area of the brain is responsible for antigravity posture and facial expression?
the pons
What area of the brain controls respiratory rhythmicity, vomiting, coughing, sneezing and swallowing?
the medulla oblongata
What is the cerebellum responsible for?
complex movement, hand/eye coordination
What is the midbrain?
the is the audio/visual relay station that contains much of the reticulating activating system (RAS - arousal, wakefulness)
What is the relay processing center for sensory information?
the thalamus
What does the hypothalamus control?
- emotion
- hormone production
- sleep/wake cycles
- temperature regulation
- thirst/hunger
- sex drive
What structures make up the “diencephalon?”
thalamus + hypothalamus
What connects the two hemispheres of the brain?
the corpus collosum
What is the nucleus accumbens?
the “pleasure center” of the brain
What is the “arcuate fasciculus?”
a bundle of axons that connects Broca’s area to Wernicke’s area
What is the function of the lateral hypothalamus?
causes you to feel hungry
Lateral Hypothalamus:
L = “Let’s eat!”
What would happen if the lateral hypothalamus were destroyed?
you would no longer have anything to signal that you are hungry, so you would starve to death
What is the function of the ventromedial hypothalamus?
causes you to feel full
Ventromedial Hypothalamus:
V = “I’m Very Very full!”
What would happen if the ventromedial hypothalamus were destroyed?
you would no longer have anything to signal that you are full, so you would continue to overeat
