Anatomy Flashcards
What is a myelin sheath?
Wrapped around axons to increased action potential travel
Which cells produce myelin in the peripheral nervous system?
Schwaan cells
Which cells create the myelin sheath in CNS?
Oligodendrocytes
Is motor/sensory afferent or efferent?
Motor = efferent Sensory = afferent
How many spinal nerves are there and how many of each type?
31 pairs
- 8 cervical
- 12 thoracic
- 5 lumbar
- 5 sacral
- 1 coccygeal
Describe the route of the sensory axons from spinal nerve to spinal cord?
spinal nerve –> posterior root –> posterior rootlets –> posterior horn of spinal cord
Describe the route of motor axons from the spinal cord to the spinal nerve?
anterior horn of spinal cord –> anterior rootlets –> anterior root –> spinal nerve
What do the posterior roots contain?
sensory fibres only
What do the anterior roots contain?
motor fibres only
Do the spinal nerves contain motor or sensory fibres?
both mixed together

Which dermatomes cover the scalp, neck and shoulder?
C2-C4
Which dermatomes cover the upper limb?
C5-T1
Which dermatomes cover the lower limb, gluteal region and perineum?
L2-Co1
Which nerves are in the cervical plexus?
C1-C4
Which nerves make up the brachial plexus?
C5-T1
Which nerves make up the lumbar plexus?
L1-L4
Which nerves make up the sacral plexus?
L5-S4
Where do the sympathetic nerves exit the spinal cord?
T1-L2 (thoracolumbar)
Where would you find the sympathetic chains?
Running the length of the vertebral column
