Anatomy Flashcards
Describe the role of ligaments in the Spine
TRANSVERSE LIGAMENTS - wrap around the DENS and holds it to the RINGS of C1
APRICAL ALAR LIGAMENTS - connect the top of the DENS to the occipital
The curves in the Sagittal Plane serve what 3 functions?
- Flexibility
- Balance
- Shock Absorption
How various regions of the Spine receive blood supply?
Exiting the AORTA at every level is SEGMENTAL ARTERIES
> These wrap around the Vertebral Body & supply the vertebrae’s & spine cord with blood.
The two curves found in the Spine & associate to its role relative to the region where its found.
LORDOTIC (Lordosis) - a curve that is concave toward the posterior
> Found in the Cervical & Lumbar Spine
KYPHOYIC (Kyphosis) - a curve that is concave toward the anterior
> Found in the Thoracic & Sacrum & Coccyx
3 Continuous Ligaments
&
2 Non Continuous Ligaments
Continuous Ligaments
- Anterior Longitudinal Ligaments (ALL)
- Posterior Longitudinal Ligaments (PLL)
- Supraspinous
Non-Continuous Ligaments
- Ligamentum Ligaments
- Interspinous Ligaments
Difference between the Spinal Cord & Cauda Equina
Spinal Cord - carries sensory & motor signals back and forth from the body and brain
> Starts in the brain and pass from the skull through the FORAMEN
Cauda Equina - is a bundle of FILAMENTS in a membranous sac.
> exits the spine as the Lumbar, Sacral & Coccyx Spinal Nerves
The Five regions of the Spine?
- Cervical - 7 Vertebrae’s
- Thoracic- 12
- Lumbar - 5
- Sacrum - 5
- Coccyx - 4
The body’s 3 main Anatomical Planes?
Sagittal Plane - divides the body into Right & Left
Transverse Plane - divides the body into Top & Bottom
Frontal Plane - divides the body into Front & Back
Describe the role of Ligaments in the Spine
Transverse Ligaments - wrap around the Dens and hold it to the rings of C1
Apical Alar Ligaments - connect the top of the Dens to the Occiput
