Q

Abductor pollicis longus

A

Radial

(the only non-extensor that is by the radial nerve, but if you think about it there are five possible movements of the thumb; extension, adduction, abduction, opposition, and flexion… and abduction is the one that is closest to extension, its basically extension in a different plane, so its obviously that one which is radial nerve)

Q

Adductor pollicis brevis

A

Ulnar

(I struggle with this one but if you remember the LOAF mnemonic for median nerve which is lumbricals 1&2, opponens pollicis, abductor pollicis brevis (it must be abduction for median nerve as abduction is similar to flexion and opposition which are median), and flexor pollicis brevis; if you remember that mnemonic then you know that ALL of the muscles innervated by the median nerve are there, and the ulnar nerve must therefore innervate adductor pollicis brevis, as it isnt in the mnemonic)

Also for a quick way, we know one is median and one is ulnar… M comes before U (median, ulnar) and Ab comes before Ad (Abd, Add), so median = abd, ulnar = add

Q

Palmar interosseus muscles

A

Ulnar

Remember: DAB & PAD
dorsal abduct, palmar adduct

26
Q

What mnemonic is useful for remembering the innervation of the intrinsic muscles of the hand?

A

LOAF - median nerve

Lumbricals (index & middle)
Opponens pollicis
Abdutor pollicis brevis
Flexor pollicis brevis

Everything else is innervated by the ulnar nerve! (Hypothenars, lumbricals 3&4, interossei, & Add policis brevis which is a thenar muscle)

27

Pronator quadratus

A

Median

28
Q

Pronator teres

A

Median

29
Q

What are the names of the pronator muscle(s) are what are their innervations?

A

Pronator teres & pronator quadratus - median nerve

30
Q

Which muscles are responsible for elbow flexion and what is their innervation?

A

Brachioradialis
Biceps brachii

Musculocutaneous nerve

31
Q

What muscles does the musculocutaneous nerve innervate and what do they do?

A

Biceps brachii & brachioradialis - Flexion of the arm at the elbow

Coracobrachialis - Flexion of the shoulder

32
Q

Coracobrachialis nerve and function?

A

Musculocutaneous nerve

Flexion of shoulder`

33
Q

Brachioradialis nerve and function?

A

Musculocutaneous nerve

Flexion of arm at elbow

34
Q

Biceps brachii

A

Musculocutaneous nerve

Flexion of arm at elbow

35
Q

Deltoid nerve and function?

A

Axillary

Shoulder abduction

36
Q

Teres minor nerve and function?

A

Axillary

External rotation

37
Q

Pectoralis major nerve and function?

A

Internal rotation of the shoulder

(and adducts and flexes arm)

Lateral pectoral and medial pectoral nerves

38
Q

Pectoralis minor nerve and function?

A

Elevates ribs, draws scapula down and inward.

Medial pectoral nerve

39
Q

Serratus anterior nerve and function?

A

Boxers muscle

Protracts scapula

(also elevates ribs if scapula fixed)

Long thoracic nerve

40
Q

Latissimus dorsi nerve and function?

A

Medial rotation, adduction of arm, extension of arm at shoulder

Thoracodorsal nerve

41
Q

Trapezius nerve and function?

A

Stabilises shoulder, elevates neck, retracts, elevates and depresses scapula

Cranial accessory nerve (XI)

42
Q

Rhomboids major nerve and function?

A

Retraction of scapula, steadies scapula

Dorsal scapular nerve

43
Q

Rhomboids minor nerve and function?

A

Retraction of scapula, steadies scapula

Dorsal scapular nerve

44
Q

Levator scapulae nerve and function?

A

Elevates scapula

Dorsal scapula nerve

45
Q

Supraspinatus nerve and function?

A

Abduction of humerus (assists deltoid for initial bit)

Suprascapular nerve

46
Q

Infraspinatus nerve and function?

A

Lateral (external) rotation of humerus

Suprascapular nerve

47
Q

Teres minor nerve and function?

A

Lateral (external) rotation of humerus

48
Q

Subscapularis nerve and function?

A

Internal (medial) rotation of humerus

Subscapular nerve

49
Q

Teres major nerve and function?

A

Shoulder extension, adduction, medial rotation

Subscapular nerve

Note same actions as latissimus dorsi… remember that doing the butterfly in swimming requires you to lift arm backward and outward, which automatically pushes shoulder forward; so thats extension and adduction of the arm, and inward rotation of the shoulder… and the same for teres major.

50
Q

What are the rotator cuff muscles, their actions and their innervations?

A

Supraspinous - abduction of humerus - suprascapular nerve
Infraspinous - external rotation of humerus - suprascapular nerve
Teres minor - external rotation of humerus - axillary nerve
Subscapularis - internal rotation of humerus - subscapular nerve
