Where does the heart sit in the mediastinum?
A
Behind the body of the sternum and in front of the thoracic vertebrae 5,6,7,8

What are the borders of the heart?
A
Right border - right atrium
Left border and apex - left ventricle
- apex is in the mid clavicular line at the 5th intercostal space

What is the crista terminalis?
A
Where the sinus venarum (smooth wall) and the musculi pectinati meet
- SA node is located here

What is the fibrous skeleton of the heart?
A
4 rings around the orifices
- a pair of coronets surrounding the aorta and pulmonary valves and a pair of trigones surrounding the AV valves
- electrically isolates the muscle masses and anchors them
- provides attachment for base of each valve cusp
