Anatomy Flashcards
What is the lower portion of the lacrimal gland called?
Palpebral portion
What is the upper portion of the lacrimal gland know as?
Orbital portion
How many bones are there in the orbit?
7
How many muscles are responsible for eye movement? (Oculorotatory muscles)
6, 7 in total but the 7th lifts the upper eyelid
What is the name of the area between the open eye lids?
Palpebral fissure
What is the muscle called that elevates the upper eyelid?
Levator palpebrae superioris
What are the functions of the conjunctiva?
Facilitating free eye movement and producing biological response to foreign bodies
What is the structure in the lacrimal gland called that secretes fluid into ducts?
Acini
What do our tears do?
Defend against bacteria, lubricate the eye and provide even surface for refraction of light into the eye.
What does the thin, outer lipid tear layer do?
Helps to minimise evaporation and overflow of tears.
What does the middle tear layer do?
Aqueous layer produced by the lacrimal & accessory glands and provide bulk of tears.
What does the inner tear layer do? (Produced by goblet cells)
Helps the tear film adhere to the cornea
Name the holes in which the tears drain through.
Puncta. One found at the nasel end of upper eyelid margin and the other at the nasel end of the lower lid margin.
Where do tears go once been through puncta?
Drawn into tubes called canaliculi which drain into lacrimal sac. Then drains into nasolacrimal duct which opens up into nose.
What is the anterior chamber?
Space between cornea & iris containing fluid called aqueous humour
What is the major source of nutrition for the cornea?
Aqueous Humour
What is the aqueous humour?
Fluid inside anterior chamber produced by the ciliary body
What does the uveal tract consist of?
Iris, ciliary body and the choroid
What are the pigmented cells in the iris called?
Melanocytes, the amount depend on the eye colour.
What does the sphincter papillae muscle do?
Constricts pupil when nerves stimulated.
What does the dilatator papillae muscle do?
Dilates the pupil
Muscular ring behind the iris, onto which the ligaments supporting the lens are attached, what am I?
The ciliary body
