ANATOMY Flashcards
Fertilization
The sperm from a male meets an ovum from a female and forms a zygote; this is the point in which pregnancy begins
Sperm
the male cell that fertilizes an egg, passes on its genetic information and produces the next generation.
Gamete
A mature haploid male or female germ cell which is able to unite with another of the opposite sex in sexual reproduction to form a zygote.
Fallopian tubes
a pair of tubes along which eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus.
Prostate
the production of a fluid that, together with sperm cells from the testicles and fluids from other glands, makes up semen.
Vas Deferens
the duct which conveys sperm from the testicle to the urethra.
Blastocyst
a cluster of dividing cells made by a fertilized egg.
Embryo
offspring in the process of development.
Gestation
the process or period of developing inside the womb between conception and birth.
Implantation
During fertilization, the sperm and egg unite in one of the fallopian tubes to form a zygote. Then the zygote travels down the fallopian tube, where it becomes a morula. Once it reaches the uterus, the morula becomes a blastocyst. The blastocyst then burrows into the uterine wall — a process called implantation.
Placenta
an organ that forms in the womb, also called the uterus, during pregnancy.
umbilical cord
is considered both the physical and emotional attachment between mother and fetus.
Prental Care
is medical care you get during pregnancy
Ectopic Pregnancy
occurs when a fertilized egg grows outside of the uterus.
Miscarrage
he unexpected ending of a pregnancy in the first 20 weeks of gestation.
