Anatomy Flashcards
Abdominal Aorta
Aorta runs from the heart through the center of the chest and belly area called the abdomen.
Renal Pelvis
A hollow part in the middle of each kidney; a large cavity that collects the urine as it is produced.
Urinary Bladder
A temporary storage reservoir for urine; located in the pelvis cavity.
Size and shape varies with amount of urine it has and pressure it receives from surrounding organs.
Ureter
Connect kidneys to the urinary bladder, transporting urine from renal pelvis into the urinary bladder.
Urethra
A tube that lets urine leave the bladder and the body.
Male: passes through the prostate and into the penis.
Female: Urethra is shorter, bladder to open in front of the vagina.
Kidneys
Filter waste material out of the blood and pass them out of the body as urine; found on either side of the spine below the rib cage.
Inferior Vena Cava
Carries deoxygenated blood from the lower and middle body into the right atrium of the heart;
Large vein.
Renal Activity
Carry a large volume of blood from the heart to the kidneys; two renal arteries both left and right.
Renal Vein
Blood vessels that return blood to the heart from the kidney;
Each kidney is drained by its own renal vein, each renal vein drains into a large vein called IVC, that carries blood directly to the heart.
Urea
Urea nitrogen is a waste product made when the liver breaks down protein.
Carried in the blood and filtered out by the kidneys and removed from the body in the urine.
Uric Acid
A normal body waste product.
Form when chemicals called purines break down.
Creatinine
A chemical waste product of creatine.
Removed from the body entirely by kidneys.
