Floor of temporal fossa.
Temporalis insertion ?
Coronoid process and anterior border of ramus.
Temporalis action ?
Elevate and retract mandible.
Temporalis examination ?
Palpate temples and ask patient to clench their teeth.
Masseter origin ?
Zygomatic arch.
Masseter insertion ?
Lateral surface and angle of the mandible.
Masseter action ?
Elevate mandible.
Masseter examination ?
Palpate from either side and extra-orally, ask patient to clench their teeth.
Lateral pterygoid origin ?
Lateral aspect of lateral pterygoid plate.
Lateral pterygoid insertion ?
Anterior border of condyle and intra-auricular disc via two independent heads.
Lateral ptyergoid action ?
Depression and lateral movement of the jaw (along with suprahyoid muscles).
Lateral pterygoid exam ?
Resistance to lateral movement of the jaw.
Medial pterygoid origin ?
Medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate (deep head) and tuberosity of the maxilla (superficial head).
Medial pterygoid insertion ?
Medial surface of the angle of the mandible.
Medial pterygoid action ?
Elevates and protrudes mandible.
