Anatomy 1: Nosebleeds and sinuses Flashcards
What are the 3 parts of the ethmoid bone?
And what are they made up of?
Roof - Cribriform plate & crista galli
Lateral wall - Superior and middle cochae
Septum - perpendicular plate of ethmoid
What are the 3 mucosa in the nasal cavities?
Keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
Respiratory epithelium
Olfactory mucosa
The olfactory nerve provides special sensory to the nose but what other cranial nerve(s) supply somatic sensory in the nasal cavity?
Trigeminal Nerve:
CNV1 - superiorly
CNV2 - inferiorly
What arteries branch off the internal and external arteries that supply the nasal cavity?
External: Facial + maxillary
Internal: Ophthalmic
What is Kiesselbach’s area?
An arterial anastomosis on the nasal septum
What bone are the superior and middle cochae part of?
Ethmoid bone
What nerve supply do you need to be aware of when inserting an NG tube?
CNV2
Where is the Eustachian tube located?
From the middle ear to the lateral wall of the nasopharynx
What are paranasal sinuses?
Air-filled spaces within bones
Where are the paranasal sinuses found?
1 frontal bone: 2 frontal sinuses
2 maxillae: 2 maxillary sinuses
1 ethmoid bone: 2 sets ethmoidal air cells
1 sphenoid bone: 2 sphenoidal sinuses
What are the paranasal sinuses lined by?
Mucous-secreting respiratory mucosa
Sinus drainage of the:
1) Frontal sinus
2) Maxillary sinus
3) Ethmoidal cells
4) Sphenoidal sinus
1) Middle meatus
2) Middle meatus
3) Middle meatus + Superior meatus
4) Spehnoethmoidal recess
What drains into the inferior meatus
lacrimal fluid drain into the nasolacrimal duct into inferior meatus
How does cold weather/smoking affect the sinuses
Interfere with the cilia of respiratory mucosa wafting mucous towards the ostia.
Leads to Sinusitis
What causes a swelling of mucosa leading to reduced diameter of ostia?
Viral URTI
