Anatomical Terms & Organ system Flashcards
Anatomy
Deals with the structure of the body and its parts (form and organization)
Physiology
Studies the function of the body parts and how they work
Superior
Above another body part
Inferior
Below another body part
Anterior
Towards the front of the body
Posterior
Towards the back of the body
Medial
Towards midline (when body is divided in half)
Lateral
Away from midline (towards the side)
Bilateral
Paired structures with one on each side (eyes, ears, arms)
Ipsilateral
Structures on the same side of body
Contralateral
Structures on the opposite sides of body
Proximal
Closer to point of attachment to trunk or referenced body part
Distal
Further from the point of attachment to trunk or referenced body part
Superficial
Near the surface (outwards)
Deep
More internal (deep cut)
Sagittal Section
Divides the body into right and left positions
mid-Sagittal
Passes along the midline and divides the body into equal parts
Parasagittal
A section Lateral to the midline (Away from the midline)
Transverse (Horizontal) Section
Divides the body into superior and inferior portions (up and down sections)
Frontal (coronal) Section
Divides the body into anterior and posterior sections (front and back sections)
cross-section
A cut across the structure
Oblique section
An angular cut through the structure
Longitudinal section
A lengthwise cut through the structure
Axial portion contains?
Head, Neck, and Trunk
