Toward backbone, away from front of body (L. Dorsum=back)
Dorsal
Away from backbone or toward front of body (L. Venter=belly)
Ventral
Toward the front, or away from back. Reference to free extremities or the head, but maybe used interchangeably with ventral.
Anterior
Toward the back, or away from front. Used interchangeably with dorsal.
Posterior
In hands and forearm. Used for ventral, while dorsal is retained.
Palmer
In feet and sole of foot. Dorsal is top of foot.
Planter
Toward surface
Superficial
Away from surface
Deep
Upper
Superior
Lower
Inferior
Toward head–rostral and cephalad used too
Cranial
Toward tail, away from head
Caudal
Toward the outer surface–used often to describe body cavities or body wall, but sometimes used interchangeably with superficial
External
Toward the inner surface, interchangeable with deep
Internal
Toward the axis or midline
Medial
Away from axis or midline
Lateral
