Anatomical Terminology
The anatomical position is the standard reference position used from which all other movements occur.
POSTERIOR
The posterior is the back of the body
ANTERIOR
ANTERIOR is the front of the body
SUPERIOR
Above the reference point of the structure. Basically the top side of the body.
INFERIOR
Below the reference point of the structure. the bottom side of the body
MEDIAL
Towards the midline of the structure
LATERAL
Away from the midline of the structure
PROXIMAL
Closer to the attachment point of a limb
e.g. proximal end of humerus
DISTAL
Further away from the attachment point of a limb
e.g. distal end of humerus
SUPERFICIAL
Towards the surface of a structure
DEEP
Further away from the surface of a structure
