Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Head, neck, and trunk
Axial
Appendages (limbs) attached to the axis
Appendicular
Toward the upper part, above
Superior (cranial)
Away from the the upper part, toward the lower part; below
Inferior (caudal)
Toward or at the front of the body; in front of
Anterior (ventral)
Toward or at the back of the body; behind
Posterior (dorsal)
Toward or at the midline of the body; on the inner side of
Medial
Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of
Lateral
In between
Intermediate
Closer to the point where a limb attaches to the body trunk
Proximal
Farther from the point where the limb attaches to the body trunk
Distal
Toward or at the body’s surface
Superficial (external)
Away from the body surface
Deep (internal)
A vertical plane that divides the body into left and right sections
Sagittal
Plane goes directly through the midline
Midsagittal
Plane that cuts off the midline (to the left or right of the midline)
Parasagittal
A vertical plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior sections
Frontal (coronal)
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior and inferior sections
Transverse (cross section)
Part of axial portion of the body, encased in bony structures for protection; houses the nervous system organs
Dorsal body cavity
Holds the brain
Cranial cavity
Holds the spinal cord within the bony vertebrae
Vertebral (spinal) cavity
Part of the axial portion of the body, less protected but allows more mobility; houses the visceral organs
Ventral body cavity
Holds the heart and lungs, protected by ribs and muscles
Thoracic cavity
Holds the lungs
Pleural cavitiy
Holds the heart, esophagus, and trachea
Pericardial cavity
Holds the abdomen and pelvis
Abdominopelvic cavity
Holds the stomach, intestines, spleen, liver, (as well as other organs)
Abdominal cavity
Holds the bladder, some reproductive organs, and rectum (protected by the pelvis)
Pelvic cavity
Contains the mouth including the teeth and tongue
Oral cavity
Connects the oral cavity all the way to the rectum
Digestive cavity
Within and behind the nose
Nasal cavity
Holds the eyes
Orbital cavity
Contain the tiny bones medial to the eardrums
Middle ear cavities
Joint cavities
Synovial cavities
Your skin, which covers your body’s surface
Cutaneous membrane
Line all body cavities that open to the outside of the body
Mucous membrane
Lines ventral body cavities that are closed, as well as covering many organs
Serous membrane
Lines the body cavity
Parietal membrane
Covers the internal organs
Visceral membrane
The membrane that covers the the brain and spinal cord in the dorsal body cavity
Meninges
