closest to trunk, nearer to the point of origin
distal
distant from trunk, farther from point of origin
posterior
towards back
anterior

away from the midline

away from the surface

near the surface
inferior
towards feet/lying below
sagittal
a longitudinal plane, divides a bilaterally symmetrical organism into the right and left sections (head to toe)
coronal (frontal)
a plane parallel to the long axis of the body, runs perpendicular to the sagittal plane; seperates the body into front and back portions. The mid-coronal divides the body into anterior/posterior also referred to as ventral/dorsal (crown)
transverse (horizontal)
a plane which divides the body into an upper and a lower half
quadrants
used to seperate the body (mainly the abdomen) into 4 areas for ease of diagnosis/treatment/etc.
