Anterior
Toward the front (means in front of)
Posterior
Toward the back (means behind of)
Medial
Anything closer to the midline (spinal area / up& down)
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body (ex. away from the spine / side to side)
Same side as.
Stomach & spleen (left side)
Ipsilateral (Homolateral)
Opposite side of. (Stomach is contralateral to liver)
Contralateral
Intermediate
Between two things. (Heart is intermediate w/ the right & left lung)
Toward the top (head)
Superior
Inferior
Below (Abdomen is inferior to chest cavity)
Proximal
Closer to the point of origin. (The elbow is proximal to the wrist)
Distal
Further away from the point of origin. (The knee is distal to the thigh)
Superficial (external)
Closer to the surface (Skin is superficial to muscles)
Further from the surface (Muscles are deep to the skin)
Deep (internal)
Ventral (anterior)

Back Side (the heart is dorsal to the sternum)
Dorsal (posterior)
