Anatomical Terminology and Body Organization Flashcards
what is standard anatomical position?
the anatomical and directional terms used to reference how a human is standing
what is sagittal plane?
divides the body into right and left pieces
what is the coronal (frontal) plane?
divides the body into front (ventral/anterior) and back (dorsal/posterior) pieces
what is transverse plane?
divides the body in superior and inferior pieces
what is the longitudinal sections?
produced by cutting the structure parallel to the long axis
what are the cross sections?
produced by cutting perpendicular to the long axis
what are the oblique sections?
they are not cut along any of the axes or planes
what are body cavities?
most of the body’s organs are housed inside internal compartments
what are the main two cavities?
dorsal cavity and the ventral cavity
what is the dorsal cavity?
houses the brain and spinal cord
what is the ventral cavity?
thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity
what is the abdominopelvic cavity?
abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity
