Anatomical terminology Flashcards
What are the key features of the Anatomical position?
- Does not change regardless of motion
- Face forwards
- Upright
- Feet together, toes front
- Palms face forwards (forearm bones are parallel
What does superior mean?
closer to the head
What does inferior mean?
further away from the head
What does medial mean?
closer to the midline of the body
what does lateral mean?
further from the midline
When describing parts of the body, what should you use to describe this?
describe in relation to other parts of the body
what does proximal mean?
describes closer to the trunk
what does distal mean?
describes something as further away from the trunk
what does deep mean?
Further away from the surface
eg. bone is deep to muscle
what does superficial mean?
closer to the surface
eg. skin is the most superficial part
What are the planes?
imaginary sheets that run through the body to divide into sections/parts. They are NOT static
What is the sagittal?
divides into left and right portions
what is the coronal?
divides the body into anterior and posterior portions
what is the transverse?
divides the body into upper and lower portions
in flexion, what happens to the angle of the joint?
it decreases
what are the two movements specific to the ankle joint?
and what do they mean?
Dorsiflexion - toes are brought up
plantar flexion - toes pointing to the ground
what is abduction?
the movement of the joint moves the limb further away from the midline
what is adduction?
the movement at the joint towards the midline
What is circumduction?
a combination of flexion, extension, adduction and abduction. With NO rotation
What is rotation?
requires a round head
no change in angle of the joint
