Concerns the function of the body’s structural machinery, how the body works and carries out its life-sustaining activities
What is Anatomy?
The study of the structure of body parts and their relationship to one another
Anatomical Position
- used when describing parts of the body in relation to each other
- allows documenting or observing regardless of position
- portrays the body in an upright position, face forward, arms at side with forearms fully supinated
Anterior
Front surface of the body
Posterior
Back surface of the body
Superior
Closer to the top of the body excluding arms and legs
Inferior
Closer to the lower half of the body excluding arms and legs
Medial
Toward the midline or mid-sagittal
Lateral
Away from the midline or mid-sagittal
Proximal
Towards the upper segment of the limb
Distal
Towards the lower segment of the limb
Superficial
Closer to the surface
Deep
Further from the surface
Sagittal plane
Vertical plane which runs through the body and divides the body into left and right halves
Frontal/Coronal plane
Vertical plane that divides the body into front and back.anterior and posterior
