Anatomical terminology Flashcards
what does the suffix ulum mean?
little or small
what does serratus mean?
jagged like the teeth of a saw
what is anatomy?
how the body is created as one, what sits next to what, starting from reference point
what is the plane that cuts body in half horizontally?
Transverse (axial) plane, horizontally, divides body into superior and inferior - ct scans and mri scans, from feet up
what is the plane that cuts body in half vertically?
sagittal plane, lies vertically and parallel to median - divides body equally from L to R
what is the plane that cuts body in half separating front and back?
frontal plane (coronal), divides body into anterior and posterior
what is the plane that cuts body in half vertically?
cell
what does the suffix itis mean?
inflammation
what is abduction and adduction?
- Abduction - taking part of body from mid line (like if youre abducted youre taken away from your family)
- Adduction - bring It back to mid line
how many bones are in our body?
206 bones in the body (by age of 30)
humans are born with 350 bones!!!
bones fuse and come together
what is flexion and extension?
- Flexion - bringing two parts of the body together, flexion of knee is bringing foot up backwards to knee - sagittal plane
- Extension - away
what is supination and pronation?
- Supination - rotation of forearm so palm faces up, soupernation holding your soup up
- Pronation - opposite, rotation down , pronation - prone to spilling , face down

what are the 3 skeletal systems in animals?
hydrostatic skeleton
exoskeleton
endoskeleton
what does dorsal mean?
to the back of the body like dorsal fin
What is microanatomy?
Cytology and histology
Involves the study of cells and tissues at a microscopic level.
What is physiology?
Science of body functions and how body parts work
Includes cell physiology and systemic physiology.
List the four major classes of tissues.
- Muscle
- Nerve
- Epithelia
- Connective
These tissues combine to form organs and systems.
What is the hierarchy of biological organization?
Cells, tissues, organs, systems, whole body
Represents the structural organization in living organisms.
What does ‘bifurcate’ mean?
Divides into two
The prefix ‘bi-‘ means two.
What is the reference position in anatomy?
Standard position for describing the body
Typically, the body is standing upright, facing forward.
What does the frontal plane divide?
Divides body into anterior and posterior
Also known as the coronal plane.
What does the transverse plane divide?
Divides body into superior and inferior
Also known as the axial plane.
What does the sagittal plane do?
Divides body equally from left to right
Lies vertically and parallel to the median.
