Superior
Means a part above another part
Inferior
A part below another part
Anterior (ventral)
Means toward the front
Posterior (dorsal)
Means toward the back
Medial
Refers to an imaginary midline dividing the body. A part is medial if it is closer to midline than another part.
Lateral
Means toward the side, away from the midline
Bilateral
Refers to paired structures, one on each side
Ipsilateral
Refers to structures on the same side. The left lung and kidney are ipsilateral.
Contralateral
Refers to structures on the same side.
Proximal
Describes a part closer to a point of attachment to the trunk than another body part. (The elbow is proximal to the wrist)
Distal
Means a particular body part is farther away from a point of attachment to the trunk.
Superficial (ytlig)
Means ner the surface
Deep
Describes more internal parts.
Sagittal (sagittalplan)
