Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
What is the vertical plane that divides the body along the longitudinal axis, but not necessarily in equal halves?
Sagittal Plane
What is the vertical plane that travels exactly at the middle, thus dividing the body into equal right and left halves?
Midsagittal/Median Plane
What do you call sagittal planes that are uneven and don’t travel along the midline?
Parasagittal Plane
What is the vertical plane that divides the body into back and front and is situated at the right angle to the midsagittal plane?
Coronal/Frontal Plane
What is the anatomical plane that divides the body into an upper and a lower half
Horizontal/Transverse Plane
When is a structure located medially?
A structure is medial when it is nearer to the midsagittal plane than another.
When is a structure located laterally?
A structure is located laterally when it lies farther away from the midsagittal plane than another.
When is a structure located intermediately?
A structure is intermediately located when it lies between a more medial and more lateral structure.
Describes the front or direction toward the front of the body?
Anterior/Ventral
Describes the back or direction toward the back of the body.
Posterior/Dorsal
Describes the front of the hand.
Palmar
Describes the back of the hand.
Dorsal
Describes the front of the foot.
Plantar
Describes the back of the foot.
Dorsal
What is the anatomical position of a structure located toward r the head end or upper part of a structure or body?
Superior/Cranial
What is the anatomical position of a structure when it is situated away from the head end or toward the power part of a structure or the body?
Inferior/Caudal
When is a structure located proximally?
A structure is located proximally when it is close to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the trunk of the body.
When is a structure located distally?
When the structure is farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment to the trunk of the body.
Describes the anatomical position of being located toward or at the body surface.
Superficial
Describes the anatomical position of being located away from the body surface and more inward.
Deep
What are the types of laterality and their definitions?
- Ipsilateral - occurring on the same side as another structure
- Contralateral - occurring on the opposite side as another structure
- Unilateral - structures occurring on one side only
- Bilateral - paired structures with right and left members
What do you call the site where two or more bones come together?
Joints
What do you call a movement that travels along the sagittal plane and decreases the angle between bones or parts of the body?
Flexion
