Towards the head of the body or upper
ex: your eyes are superior to your nose
Superior (Cranial)
Towards the feet, away from the head or lower
ex: your knees are inferior to your shoulder
Inferior (Caudal)
Front of the body.
ex: your chest is anterior to your back
Anterior (Ventral)
Back of the body.
ex: Your back is posterior to your chest
Posterior (Dorsal)
Towards the midline of the body.
ex: your heart is medial to your arms
Medial
Away from the midline of the body.
Ex: your arms are lateral to your heart
Lateral
Closer to the trunk or point of attachment.
ex: your stomach is proximal to your torso
Proximal
Farther from the trunk or point of attachment.
ex: your wrist is distal to your elbow
Distal
Closer to the surface of the body.
Superficial
Farther from the surface of the body.
