Anterior (ventral)/posterior (dorsal)
Describes front/back
Superior (cranial)/inferior (caudal)
Describes position higher/lower than another part of the body proper
Lateral
Direction towards side of body
Medial
Middle or direction towards middle of body
Proximal/Distal
Describes a position in a limb that is farther/nearer from the point of attachment or trunk of the body
superficial/deep
Describes a position closer/farther from the surface of the body
Sagittal Plane
Divides body/organ vertically into right and left sections. (middle: Median/midsagittal) (Uneven: parasagittal)
Frontal Plane
Divides body/organ into anterior and posterior
Transverse Plane
Divides body/organ horizontally into upper and lower portions.(Produces cross sections)
Anatomical Position
-Body upright
-Feet shoulder width apart and parallel
-Toes Forward
-Upper limbs are held out laterally from each side
-palms are face forward
