Anatomical Planes Flashcards
Plane
a surface (real or imaginary) along which any two points can be connected by a straight line
Median Plane
Divides the head, body, or limb longitudinally into equal right and left halves
AKA “midsagittal plane”
Sagittal Plane
- Passes through the head, body or limb parallel to the medial plane
- Runs length of body
- Divides left and right parts not necessarily equal halves
- AKA “paramedian plane”
Transverse Plane
- Across the body
- Divides it into cranial (head-end) and caudal (tail-end) parts
- Not necessarily equal
Dorsal Plane
- Runs at right angles to the median (or sagittal) and transverse planes
- Divides the body or head into dorsal and ventral portions (i.e. top and bottom halves)
Cranial
Toward the head
Caudal
towards the tail
Rostral and caudal Terms
Used for head
Rostral
toward nose
caudal
away from nose
Dorsal and Palmar
Front legs
(used for distal limbs)
Dorsal and Plantar
Back legs
(used for distal limbs)
Carpus
wrist
Tarsus
Hock/ankle
Cranial and Caudal
above the carpus and tarsus
Dorsal and Palmar
Below the carpus
Dorsal and plantar
below the tarsus
Dorsal
back
Ventral
Belly
Superior
above or upper
Inferior
below or lower
Proximal
closer to body
Distal
more distant from body
Medial
toward medial plane
Lateral
away from medial plane
Superficial
toward the exterior
deep
toward the interior
Pronation
Turning the ventral/palmar/plantar surface to face down
Prone
Turning the ventral/palmar/plantar surface to face down
Supination
Turning the ventral/palmar/plantar surface to face up
Supine
Dorsal recumbency (to lie face up)
Recumbency
lying down
Dorsal Recumbency
on back
Ventral Recumbency
on belly
Lateral Recumbency
on side (left or right)
Cephalic
Head
Cervical
Neck
Torso

Thoracic
Chest
Abdominal
Pelvic
Abduction
move away from body
Adduction
bring toward midline (body)
Rotation
A motion that occurs when a part turns on its axis. The head rotates on the neck, as in shaking the head ‘no‘.
Circumduction
The circular movement of a body part as in “Windmilling” the arms.
