Anatomical Organization of Eye Flashcards
sclera
tough, white tunic on the posterior 5/6 of the eye,
cornea
transparent layer on the anterior 1/6 of the eye, allows light to enter the eyeball.
Uvea
middle vascular layer:
choroid
ciliary body
iris
ciliary body
located between the choroid and the iris, provides attachment for the lens and contain ciliary muscle,
iris
anterior part) densely pigmented structure with centrally located aperture (pupil), allowing light to get inside the eye
Retina
– innermost layer
visual retina
(optic part) – posterior and lateral part, sensitive to visual light,
non-visual retina
anterior part, covers the internal surface of the ciliary body and the iris.
Lens
transparent biconvex structure held in position by suspensory ligaments (zonular fibers) which are attached to the ciliary body; helps to refract light to be focused on the retina.
Optic disc
point where the axons of ganglion cells leave the eye to form the optic nerve (blind spot)
Macula lutea
yellow spot) – circular portion of the retina located lateral to the optic disc, containing fovea centralis
Yellow color –> high concentration of caratenoids, zeaxanthin
Fovea
central depression in the macula; area of most acute vision.
Anterior
between cornea & iris, filled with aqueous humor.
Posterior
between iris & lens, filled with aqueous humor.
Vitreous
space behind the lens, the largest chamber, filled with the gelatinous vitreous humor, forming vitreous body, holding the retina and providing support for the lens.
