Anatomical language Flashcards
The human skeleton is divided into two categories, what are they?
Axial and appendicular
The axial skeleton includes what bone groups?
Cranium, thorax (rib cage), and vertebral column
The appendicular skeleton includes what bone groups?
Scapula, arms, pelvis and legs
Describe the anatomical position
- Standing upright
- Feet apart and straight ahead
- arms to the side, elbows extended
- Palms forward with thumbs away from the body
- head and eyes forward
Why is the anatomical position important?
- It forms a reference point from which directional terms are derived
- Is a universal concept that allows communication with other health professionals
What term describes towards the skull or top?
Superior, cranial or cephalic
What term describes toward the feet?
Inferior or caudal
What term describes towards the front of the body? (Frontal plane)
Anterior or ventral
What term describes towards the back of the body? (Frontal plane)
Posterior or dorsal
What term describes toward the middle?
Medial
What term describes away from the middle?
Lateral
What term describes between two structures?
Intermediate
What term describes something as being closer to a point of attachment?
Proximal
What term describes something being further away from a point of attachment?
Distal
What term describes something as closer to the surface of the body?
Superficial
What term describes something as away from the surface of the body?
Deep
What is the name of the position when the anterior of the body is lying down facing the floor?
Prone
What is the name of the position when the body is lying down with the anterior facing the roof?
Supine
Describe the supine position
The body is lying down with the anterior facing the roof
Describe the prone position
The body is lying down with the anterior facing the floor
The sagittal plane divides the body into what parts?
Left and right
What is the name of the plane that divides the body into left and right?
Sagittal
The frontal or coronal plane divides the body into what parts?
Anterior or ventral (front) and posterior or dorsal (back)
What plane divides the body into anterior and posterior?
Frontal or coronal
The transverse plane divides the body into what parts?
Superior and inferior
What plane divides the body into superior and inferior?
Transverse
What is an oblique section?
A diagonal transverse plane
A diagonal transverse plane is known as what?
Oblique section
The dorsal cavities include what cavities?
Cranial and vertebral
What is the function of the dorsal cavities?
To protect the nervous system
The cranial and vertebral cavities are in which section?
Dorsal cavities
The ventral cavity includes which two major cavities?
Thoracic (superior) and abdominopelvic cavities (inferior)
What is the function of the ventral cavities?
To house the internal organs
The thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities are in which section?
The ventral cavities

Describe the planes of the 9 regions of the abdominopelvic cavity.
The nine regions of the abdominopelvic region is divided by four planes. They can be described as the superior transverse plane which transects just inferior to the ribs, the inferior transverse plane which transects just superior to the hips and parasagittal planes each medial to the nipples
