Anatomical imaging Flashcards
Imaging is..
The use of pictures of internal body structures to help decide what is causing the patient’s problem
List the types of imaging
Radiography (x-ray)
Computed Tomography (CT)
Magneti Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Ultrasound Imaging
White types of imaging uses Ionising radiation, and what uses more?
X ray and CT (CT uses a greater amount of ionising radiation)
What are the benefits of X-rays?
Gives a good view of bones and some soft tissue
What view is a CT scan?
Transverse
What are the benefits of a CT scan?
Excellent for bone detail, gives little information about soft tissues
What is the benefit of MRI?
Soft tissue imaging
Whats a disadvantage of MRI?
Take 30 minutes to produce images, Babies require sedation
What colour does bone appear on an MRI?
Grey
How can ultrasound be used?
for the diagnosis of soft tissue conditions
What is ionising radiation?
X-rays knock electrons out of atoms, leaving a charged incomplete atom (an ion) and electrons (free radicals).
What is a disadvantage of ionising radiation?
It can cause tissue damage
what % of uk chiropractic patients have X-rays
20
What is a radio-lucent material, and what colour will it appear on an X-Ray?
A material that the x-rays can pass through easily e.g. air. These appear BLACK on x-Rays
What type of material appears white on an x-ray and why?
Radio-opaque, because these materials do not allow the passage of x-rays. An example is metals.
What does the amount of absorption of an X-ray depend on?
Thickness, density and atomic number of the material the beam enters.
From blackest to whitest list the radiographic densities.
Air, Fat, Water, Bone, Metal.
adam found wendy bumming mary
What is a negative to X-rays?
Both the anterior and posterior are in the image. meaning summation and super-imposition can make you see something thats not there.
What is a diagnostic view in X-Rays?
using two views at 90’ angles to one another
