Anatomical position
standing, face forward, palms forward
superior
towards your head
inferior
towards your feet
ventral (anterior)
your front
dorsal (posterior)
your back
medial
towards your midline
lateral
away from the midline
limbs - proximal
towards the body
limbs - distal
away from the body
superficial
towards the surface (outside)
deep
towards the center (inside)
sagittal plane
cuts through the middle - divides you into L & R
parasagittal plane
splits R & L into half at the clavicle (splits into fourths)
coronal plane
cuts like a headband - splits through top of skull into ventral & dorsal
transverse plane
cuts at the abdomen - splits into inferior & superior
anatomical planes
need at least 2 planes provided to localize something
