Anatomical Descriptions, Cells, & Tissues Flashcards
What are the 3 body planes?
- Sagittal Plane - Divides body into right and left side
- Coronal Plane - Divides body into anterior and posterior
- Transverse Plane - Section which cuts across a body region
What are the 3 body types?
- Ectomorph
- Endomorph
- Mesomorph
What are characteristics of Ectomorph?
- Definitive “Hard Gainer”
- Delicate built body
- Flat chest
- Fragile
- Lean
- Lightly muscled
- Small shouldered
- Takes longer to gain muscle
- Thin
What are characteristics of Endomorph?
- Soft body
- Undeveloped muscles
- Round physique
- Weight loss is difficult
- Gains muscle easily
Define: Anatomy
Study and structures of the body
What are characteristics of Mesomorph?
- Athletic
- Hard body
- Hourglass shaped (female)
- Rectangular shaped (Male)
- Mature Muscle mass
- Muscular body
- Excellent posture
- Gains muscle easily
- Gains fat easier than Ectomorphs
- Thick skin
Define: Physiology
Study of the processes that occur in the body
Define: Histology
Study of structure and function of cells and tissues
Define: Cell
Single unit of matter that can live independently and reproduce
Define: Tissue
Group of cells of similar type and function
Define: Organ
Made up of tissues of related function e.g heart, kidney, liver
Define: System
Organs form part of a system e.g cardiovascular system, respiratory system
What are the functions of a cell?
(MRS GREM)
Movement - move from one place to another
Respiration - be able to breathe
Sensitivity - able to respond to a stimulus which can be mechanical, electrical, thermal or chemical
Growth - be able to grow
Reproduction - be able to reproduce
Excretion - be able to excrete
Metabolism - Chemical reactions which occur inside the cell
a) Anabolism - chemical activity involved in the building up of new products
b) Catabolism - Chemical activity involved in the breakdown of complex substances into simple forms
What is an Organelle?
Small formed structures which lie within the cell
