Anatomical and Bone Terminology Flashcards
Anatomical position
standing, with the forearm in the pronated position
Transverse plane( a.k.a. cross section)
parallel to the ground and divides the body into inferior and superior parts
Frontal plane
perpendicular to the ground and divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
Sagittal plane(a.k.a. medial plane
also perpendicular to the ground, but divides the body into left and right
Midsagittal plane
when the sagittal plane is located at the midline, such that the body is cut into equal halves
Parasagittal plane
Sagittal planes offset from the midline
Axial part
the central part of our body, along the body’s axis
Appendicular part
refers to the limbs (the appendages), and the girdles (shoulder, pelvis) that attach these limbs to the body
Proximal structure
When identifying structures on the limbs, it is closer to the point of attachment to the axial skeleton than another structure
Distal structure
further from the point of attachment to the axial skeleton ex. wrist is distal compared to elbow
superior
a structure that is above another
inferior
a structure that is below another
cephalic
refers to the head
caudal
refers to the tail
Anterior
refers to the front of the body
Posterior
refers to the back of the body
Ventral
refers to the belly
