Anatomic Directions and Planes Flashcards
Anterior or ventral
Toward the front
Posterior or dorsal
Toward the back
Superior or cranial
Toward the head
Inferior or caudal
Away from the head
Medial
Toward the midline
Lateral
Away from the midline
Proximal
Near the point of origin
Distal
Away from the point of origin
Sagittal Plane
Vertical plane running from anterior to posterior locations. Dividing the structure into right and left sides.
(Median) Midsagittal Plane
A sagittal plane through the midline. Dividing the structure into right and left halves.
Coronal or frontal plane
Vertical plane running from side to side, dividing the structure into anterior and posterior parts.
Transverse plane
Horizontal plane dividing the structure into superior and inferior parts.
Anatomic position
Patient standing upright.
Head, eye gaze, and toes are all directed forward.
Arms are relaxed and to the side with palms facing forward.
Lower limbs are close together with the feet parallel.
Supine
Laying down, face upward.
Prone
Face downward.
External
Farther from the center of an organ.
Internal
Nearer the center of an organ.
Rostral
Often used instead of anterior when describing parts of the brain…towards the beak.
Bilateral
Referring to paired structures
Unilateral
Occurring on one side only.
Ipsilateral
Occurring on the same side of the body as another structure.
Contralateral
Occurring on the opposite side of the body relative to another structure.
Abduction
Moving away from the median plane in the frontal plane.
Adduction
Moving toward the median plane in the frontal plane.
Elevation
Moving a body part superiorly.
Depression
Moving a body part inferiorly.
What are the 2 principal planes of the eye?
Equatorial plane and Meridional plane.
Equatorial plane
lies midway between the anterior and posterior poles of the eye and is perpendicular to the meridional plane.
Meridional plane
passes through the anterior and posterior poles of the eye. The meridional plane may be horizontal, vertical or oblique; however it must intersect the anterior and posterior poles.
Sagittal planes are parallel to meridional planes but do not pass through the anterior and posterior poles.
Sclerad
Towards the sclera.
Vitread
Towards the vitreous humor.
