What is anaphylaxis?
Inappropriate immunological response causing mass release of histamine
Respiratory symptoms of anaphylaxis
Difficulty/noisy breathing Swelling of tongue Difficulty talking Hoarse voice Wheezing
Circulation symptoms of anaphylaxis
Collapse
Floppiness
Hypotension
Slow capillary refill time
Neurological symptoms of anaphylaxis
Loss of consciousness
Agitation
Feeling scared
Skin changes of anaphylaxis
Flushed skin
Rash
Angioedema
How long does adrenaline take to work?
One to two minutes
How many doses can authorised vaccinators give of adrenaline?
No maximum.
Half life is 15 minutes so repeat dosing after 15 minutes.
What key emergency equipment is needed?
Three adrenaline 1:1000 amps with dose chart 1mL tuberculin syringe Needles Phone Bag valve mask resuscitator
What is the procedure if anaphylaxis occurs?
- Check Airways, Breathing, Circulation.
- Call for help
- Position patient safely
- Adminsiter adrenaline
- CPR
- Record vital signs
- Hospital
Maximum dose of adrenaline that can be adminstered by an authorised vaccinator?
0.5mL
What to do if someone faints?
Raise legs. Usually will recover on its own/
What to do if a baby is breath-holding?
Blow on face/flick with water. If first case, refer to GP.

What is hypotonic-hyporesponsive episode?
Sudden onset of limpness, and reduced responsivenss occurring after vaccination in children under 2.
