Analytical Psychology- Carl Jung Flashcards
Founder of Analytical Psychology
Carl Jung
Jung’s Theory was influenced by?
-His childhood experiences and his dreams/fantasies
Jung believed that Personality is shaped by-?
-Both the future and the past
Jung’s definition of Libido
-He didn’t agree that it is a primary sexual energy
Used the term Libido in 2 ways
a. A diffuse generalised life energy
b. A narrower energy that fuels the Psyche
Psychic Value
When a person invests a great amount of psychic energy in an idea or feeling, its known to have ‘psychic value’
Jung believed Psychic Energy operated on 3 principles:
- Principle of Opposites
- Principle of Equivalence
- Principle of Entropy
Principle of Opposites
Every aspect of the psyche has its opposite and that this opposition generates psychic energy.
E.g heat v/s cold
Principle of Equivalence
Energy is never totally lost to the personality, but it shifts from one part to another.
-In whatever direction/manner that energy flows, the energy continuously gets redistributed within the personality.
E.g. If we lose interest in a hobby, psychic energy that’s formerly invested in that area shifts to a new area.
Principle of Entropy
-This principle states that there’s a tendency towards equilibrium in the personality.
E.g If two desires/beliefs differ greatly in intensity/psychic value, energy will flow from the more strongly held to the weaker.
Jung’s System’s of Personlity
3 systems of Personlity:
- Ego
- Personal Unconscious
- Collective Unconscious
