Analytical Chemistry Flashcards
What is the first test you do to test for positive ions?
The flame test
What colour will the flames go if Lithium is present?
Crimson
What colour will the flame go is sodium is present
Yellow
What colour will the flame go if potassium is present ?
Lilac
What colour will the flame go if Calcium is present?
Orange/Red
What colour will the flame go if copper is present?
Green
What test of done if there are no results from the flame test?
Sodium Hydroxide
What colour will the precipitate be after adding NaOH if copper is present?
Blue
What colour will the precipitate be after adding NaOH if Iron(II) is present?
Light Green
What colour will the precipitate be after adding NaOH if iron(III) is present?
Red/Brown
What do you do if you get a white precipitate when testing for positive ions?
You add more NaOH
What metal is present of the excess NaOH dissolves?
Aluminium(III)
What metal is present if the excess NaOH is insoluble?
Magnesium(II)
Could be calcium but would uses flame test to find out
How do you test for Carbonates?
Add acid and test for carbon dioxide
How do you test for Sulfates?
Add hydrochloride acid
Add barium chloride
If their is a white precipitate the test is positive
How do you test for Halides?
Add a dilute nitric acid
Add silver nitrate
If a precipitate is formed the test is positive
What colour would chloride precipitate be?
White
