Analytical Chemistry 1 ✅ Flashcards
What is analytical chemistry?
It is the science field evolving and adapting methods, devices and strategy for obtaining information about chemical composition, structure and energy state of substances.
What sciences does analytical chemistry play a vital role in?
chemistry
biology biotechnology
food science
veterinary medicine
environmental science
etc.
What are the two types of analysis?
Quantitative and Qualitative
What is qualitative analysis?
Attempting to identify what materials are present in a sample.
eg. determination of chemical identity of the species in the sample.
What is quantitative analysis?
Determing how much of a material is present in a sample.
eg. determination of the amount of species or analytes, in numerical terms.
What are the major types of analysis?
instrumental, titrations and gravimetry
What are gravimetric methods of analysis?
measure the mass of an analyte (or something chemically equivalent to the analyte).
What are titrimetric (volumetric) methods of analysis?
Measure the quantity of a reagent needed to completely react the analyte.
What is the instrumental method type of analysis?
use an instrumental technique to assay the amount of sample
What are the instrumental methods (separation technique)?
- chromatography
- electrophoresis
- electrochemistry
What is chromatography?
Physical method of separation in which the components to be separated are distributed between two phases, one of which is stationary (stationary phase) while the other (the mobile phase) moves in a definite direction.
What is electrophoresis?
is the motion of dispersed particles relative to a fluid under the influence of a spatially uniform electric field.
What is electrochemistry?
oxidation reduction chemistry of analytes.
What are the different criteria to selecting a method of investigation?
• precision
• bias/ shift
• sensitivity
• detection limit
• concentration range
• selectivity
What are the 8 steps in chemical analysis?
- formulating the question
- selecting the analytical procedure (literature survey)
- sampling
- sample preparation (converting sample into a form suitable for chemical analysis)
- chemical analysis
- calibration curves
- interpreting the results
- draw conclusions
