What is the analysis of:
“I will drag thee on a hurdle thither”
~ the noun “hurdle” cart used to carry prisoners to exercution. It creates the threat of violence, death or humiliation.
~ the verb “drag” suggests aggression and is usually used when treating an inanimate object without care. This dehumanises her.
~ the model verb “will” expresses certainty and that he will not be talked out of this. His need for extreme for power and control.

~ “O” and “!” suggest a heartfelt expression which shows how strongly society believed that the role of men was to be machismo and aggressive.
~ the use of the three adjectives suggest how disgusting Mercutio finds males submitting. The adjectives also increase in power so the effect is built up as well
~ It also suggests that betraying and being angry at your best friend is better than losing the one manly thing.

~ the alliteration of the ‘f’ sounds reveal his anger and the references to “fire” captures the heart of this temper ~ how distructive the temper will be.
~ metaphor / personification suggest intense heat of his anger. also connotes irrational actions.
~ “eyed” suggests that he is blinded by his fury
~ “Now” suggests immedietley taking action which builds up tension
~ all of this shows that the submissive Romeo from before who was willing to let the revenge go is now gone. Now he is replaced by someone who is volalitle and almost like Mercutio and Tybault.

“neighbour-stained steel”
~ this suggests that the fued has tainted the whole community with its negative influence.
~ the noun “steel” impiles that the hardness and unyielding nature of the conflict, emphasisng its deep rooted nature. It is also a metaphor for a sword which connotes violence, conflict and death.
~ “stained” with the blood of others suggests permanence, this fued is affecting the whole of Verona.
~ oxymoron ~ “neighnour” gives a sense of friendliness however “steel” gives connotations of cold and death.

“earth hath swallowed all my hopes but she”
~ Questions and imperative verbs.
~ The imperative verb “calls” suggest that Lady Capulet is demanding and controlling (context).
~ short and blunt sentances which tells us that she is cold and direct.
~ She doesn’t refer to Juliet by her name instead with the noun “daughter” which is impersonal, formal friendship.
What is the analysis of:
“bright angel”
~ referring to Juliet.
~ links to religious imagrey seen throughout the play. This suggests that their love is sacred, pure, stands out from the hatred and conflict in Verona.
~ she is on the balcony above him (metaphorically like an angel) but also literally which is a dramatic device to show distance between them.
~ context~ blasphemous, it links the the great chain of being, by moving Juliet up the great chain of being would have shocked an elizabethan audience.
~ adjective “bright” she stands out, is bettwe than the other women (and Rosaline), the light in a dark world, connotations of hope.

~ Metaphor / personifictaion. Capulet is referring to the deaths of his other children (context)
~ presents death / the earth as a vicious monster, devouring his children ~ frightening image of loss and death which builds sympathy for Capulet
