Valid (Validity)
Measures what it says it measures
Reliable (Reliability)
Measure of how accurate the scores obtained
relate to the actual performance of the client
Test-Retest Reliability
Indicator of the consistency of the test results
from one administration to another
Interrater Reliability
Indicator of the likelihood that no matter who
administers the assessment, the assessment will have a high validity
and reliability
Standardized Assessments
Goes through rigorous process of scientific inquiry to
determine its reliability and validity
* Established protocol for administration
* Some have requirements for word-for-word administration
* Table of norms (Normative data) based on research
* Age
* Gender
Normative Data
Non-Standardized Assessments
Guidelines and scoring information for administration
* May not have normative data, nor validity or reliability
* Manual muscle testing
* Sensory testing
Dynamometer
Measures grip strength
-Three trials on each hand (take average)
Tensiometer (Pinch Meter)
Measures fine motor strength in the fingers

Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM)
Interview-based assessment looking at occupations
* Importance, satisfaction and perception of occupational performance (wants
to do, has to do, is expected to do but can’t or isn’t satisfied with
performance
* Designed by Canadian OTs- classify occupations differently than OTPF
* To give the assessment:
* Establish rapport
* Ask open ended questions that elicit information about the various occupations
* Write down all that they state
* Identify 5 areas that are most important to client
