In this deck, we’re looking at poetic techniques. Why would you use “trudge” instead of “mass”?
To show fatigue and also to show that it was undignified.
“Who’ll grip and tackle the job unafraid?
And who thinks he’d rather sit tight?”
What technique is used here?
There is an AABB rhme shown here.
There is also juxtaposition- showing contrast between the soldiers that go to war- and cowards that stay at home.
What poetry technique is in the phrase: “happy as a lark”?
Simile.

Why did a lot of soldiers dislike Jessie Pope?
She wrote a poem encouraging people to fight for their country but it was unrealistic to what actually happened in the war. It was not all fun and games.
What rhyming scheme is used here?
“If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin”?

Why would there be alliteration of the letter “r”, especially in a war poem?
It could serve as a type of onomatopoeia; like the sound of a machine-gun rattling away.

A point in which the emotion/mood of the poem changes.

What in the world is enjambment?
The continuation of a sentence without a pause at the end of a line. It’s an underrated technique.
What technique describes the beat of the poem?
Rhythm.
