Stative verb
A verb which represents doing something mental (e.g. think, ponder, wonder)
Dynamic verb
Active verb
A verb which represents doing something; a physical action, process or sensation, not a state (e.g. run, hit, go, jump, fly).
Imperative verb
Orders (e.g. ‘Shut up!’)
Transitive verb
A verb that allows the subject to perform an action on an object. (e.g. ‘She slapped his face.’)
It must be used in combination with another object (noun/pronoun/noun phrase).
Intransitive verb
A verb that acts by itself; one that doesn’t need a direct object. (e.g. ‘I sleep.’)
Subjunctive verb
A verb that expresses something desired or imagined. (e.g. ‘I wish I wasn’t in Mr Forster’s class.’)
Auxiliary verb
A verb used along with a main verb to express tense, mood, or voice (e.g. has, have, is, am, are, was, were, does, did and modal verbs).
Consonance
Repeated consonant sounds (E.g. ‘the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle’).
Assonance
Repeated vowel sounds (E.g. the ‘dolphin torn, the gong tormented sea’, hop-scotch, great flakes).
Polysyndeton
Polysyndetic listing
A sentence that uses of lots of conjunctions (e.g. ‘The man was short and fat and as he walked, sweat dripped down his large forehead.’)
Prepositional phrase
A phrase which tells you where something is (e.g. ‘Under the rock there lived an ant.’)
Declarative sentence
A sentence that states a fact, opinion or mood (e.g. ‘I like you.’)
Tag question
A statement followed by a mini-question e.g. it’s nice out, isn’t it?
Synesthesia
A figurative use of words that uses more than one sense to draw out a response from the reader e.g. the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music (connotes happiness).
