What types of texts are non-fiction texts?
biography autobiography history travel science newspaper magazine reviews letters pamphlets
What does GASPS stand for?
Genre - type of writing e.g. autobiographical, argument?
Audience - who is the piece written for?
Style - use of language?
Purpose - what does the writer want to achieve?
Subtext - what is the writer telling the reader indirectly?
How many times should you read a text before your start writing about it?
At least twice
Why is genre important?
It gives a clue about what the writer is trying to achieve in general terms.
Why is knowing who the audience is important?
It will help to focus you in on the type of language and literary devices that are used and why.
Why is thinking about the style important?
It helps to identify the 'voice' of the piece. e.g. First person /third person formal language/ colloquial language personal view/ factual emotive/ instuctional
Why is it important to consider the purpose of a text?
Helps to identify literary devices
e.g. humour, factual writing, emotive, opinions, persuasive
Why is it important to consider the subtext of a text?
Helps to identify inferred information
e.g. anger, humour, suspicion, tolerance

Presentation
e.g. layout, illustration, headings
