Q

What Is an Analogy?

A

In Lesson 6, you were introduced to 15 new words. You are now going to use those 15 new words as you learn about analogies. An analogy is a comparison between two items. In this case, the analogy is between two words or sets of words.

Solving Analogies

A

Sometimes, two analogies will be compared. One of the analogies has a word or words missing. To solve a double analogy, you need to examine the first analogy and determine the relationship that exists between the two words. For example, in the analogy, “Car is to transportation,” you could say that the relationship between the two words is one of function or purpose.

Examples

A

Next, you need to look at the second set of words (one will be missing) and choose a word that will make the relationship between the words in the second analogy identical to the relationship between the words in the first analogy. In the example, you can ask yourself, “If the function of a car is transportation, what is the function of a tent?” One likely word that completes this analogy is shelter. The following example shows the completed analogy.

Example: car : transportation :: tent : shelter
