Analgesics - Non-opioid Flashcards
What are NSAIDs?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Give examples of NSAIDs
Aspirin and ibuprofen
What do NSAIDs do?
Relieve mild pain of musculo-skeletal origins with inflammatory components.
How do NSAIDs work?
Block synthesis of prostanoids (role in inflammation and pain) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX).
What type of pain do anti-epileptic drugs relieve?
Neuropathic pain
Give examples of anti-epileptic agents
Carbamazepine and gabapentin
What are 5HT agents used for?
Migraines
Give examples of 5HT agens
Sumatriptan, methysergide
How do 5HT agents work?
Act on 5HT 1B/D receptors in scalp involved with serotonin release important for processes linked to pain.
How does ketamine work as an analgesic?
NMDA channel blocker, block glutamate binding which is released with noxious peripheral stimuli.
What other analgesics are there?
Local-anaesthetics.
