Analgesia Flashcards
acute vs chronic
Acute: pain from a recent onset and is expected to heal in a short time (within normal healing period). acute pain caused by activation of nociceptive sensory neurones
Chronic: pain persists after expected healing time, or in the absence of injury. There’s often no identifiable cause
cancer pain vs non-cancer pain
Cancer: progressive, may be a mixture of acute and chronic
Non-cancer: many different causes, acute or chronic
nociceptive pain vs neuropathic pain
Nociceptive pain: obvious tissue damage or illness
physiological or inflammatory pain
protective function
Neuropathic pain: not obvious tissue damage
nervous system damage or abnormality
no protective function
description of pain in nociceptive vs neuropathic
Nociceptive pain: sharp/dull; well localised
Neuropathic pain: burning, shooting/numbness, pins and needles; well localised
