Anal Sac Disease Flashcards
What is anal sac disease
when the anal sacs become impacted and in many cases infected
Patient Prep
The overlying and adjacent hair is clipped, and the surgical site is prepped aseptically.
Patient positioning
The patient is placed in sternal recumbency with the hind limbs flexed to the side. The tail is wrapped and elevated over the back of the patient, away from the surgical site. A support bag is placed beneath the pubis.
Surgical procedure
Some surgeons will insert a gel into the anal glands that hardens over time. This makes the dissection to remove the animal glands easier. Once the anal glands are removed the surgical site is closed.
Post op
Dog should be observed for normal defecation post-operatively, and an Elizabethan collar should be placed to prevent patient interference. Antibiotics will continue to be administered at home and the owner should be notified of signs of wound infection or dehiscence.
