Anaesthetics/critical Care Flashcards
What is MAC in anaesthetics?
Mean alveolar concentration of inhaled anaesthetic drug
How can you tell the patient is ventilating on their own?
Condensation in mask
C02 being released on machine
Why do you give muscle relaxant before adjunct put in in surgery
Relax vocal cords as most adjuncts have to pass through them and without relaxant can get laryngospasm
What adjuncts don’t pass through the vocal cords (supraglottal)
IGELS
Which adjuncts are used if patient semi conscious
Naso pharyngeal - doesn’t trigger gag reflex
What adjunct used in and surgery - completely blocks oesophagus to prevent relfuc
Endo tracheal tube
What are the three purposes of anaesthetics
Pain control
Hypnoeic
Maintain physiology while asleep
What are the side effects of metoclopramide
Dystopia
What are the side effects of cyclising
IV - can cause euphoria, drug seeking. Can cause feel very unwell
Use infusion or IM instead but then takes a long time to take effect
What is the equation for flow through vessels
langers someone
r to the power 4
Eg double lumen size of vessel increases flow through it 16 fold
What is most important measure of BP in anaesthetics and why
MAP - more of a reliable/stable measure than BP
What is tidal volume in
Amount breathe in and out of lungs in normal breath - around 500ml in average person
What is residual volume
Amount left in lungs after breathe - 2L
Why oxygenate before give inhaled anaesthetic
Oxygenate the residual volume in lungs which allows a quicker recovery from anaesthetic
What can you see as a patient goes to sleep in the eyes
Vertical nystagmus
